A sixteen-year-old Jehovah's Witness questions her faith and family loyalty when she meets a boy from another religion while dealing with her mother's emotional abuse.

“From up in the swaying branches, far-off moos of cattle reached my ears, a plaintive chorus. I pictured my world. spread out below. The dark sweep of woods, the aching green pastures. Oreo cows swishing along, eager to get back to the barn for dinner. I pictured our neighborhood, the houses spaced far apart, everyone cut off by trees, backyards steeped in thick, wild country gardens, birds dipping and darting, rusted out trucks on blocks. In my mind, I searched, roving the town, the small brick high school I didn’t attend, the two big truck stops, full of trucks that came and went.

Not a single kindred spirit in sight.”
